Mastering Eco and Climate Conscious Therapy: Skills, Ethics, and Community

October 1, 2022 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Dr. Thomas Doherty, PhD. Keynote speaker October 1, 2022, Canby Grove Center, Canby, OR

Mother Earth is asking us to open our eyes. Climate Change is affecting all of us and the resulting emotional and physical strain is accelerating around the world. We, as mental health professionals, have a unique experience as witnesses to global sorrow through the words of our grieving clients. This single day conference aims to bring together a community of professionals and others to learn new ways to advance a climate conscious treatment model and support one another through social activism, community, and collaboration. Emphasis will be placed on creating ongoing connections of like-minded individuals to carry with them a community of climate conscious clinical support groups. The conference will include breakouts and a panel of Eco therapists.

CE: Journey Wellness is seeking approval to offer continuing education credit to counselors. Please check our website for updates.

Hosted by Alliance Counseling Center and Journey Wellness in Canby, Oregon.

The event will take place at Canby Grove Retreat Center, which hosts 54 acres of beautiful grass and forest land along the Molalla River on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A foundation of effective eco- and climate conscious therapy is familiarity with your “environmental identity.” This self-concept and sense of relationship with nature intersects with a person’s other identities in unique ways and provides the base on which to build client-specific eco and climate therapy interventions. Learning Objectives:

  • Explore one’s environmental identity, ethics, and values
  • Adapt your existing therapy orientation and skill set to address clients’ environmental and climate concerns in a culturally aware manner

3. Dr. Pilar Hernandez-Wolfe – Vicarious Resilience And Animals

Content Description:

This presentation examines the results of an exploratory study that focused on the positive impacts that helping injured animals recover had on the helpers, and these impacts are related to the concept of vicarious resilience. We will examine the themes that emerged: perspective taking, expansion of sensorial awareness to respond to nonhuman communication, persistence and faith in the animal’s resilience, inspiration and hope, patience and consistency, contributing to something greater than yourself, views on life and death, and compassion fatigue. These themes suggest that some humans learn and grow in important ways from the animals they help to recover from abuse perpetrated by other humans. We will discuss implications for eco-therapy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine the process of vicarious resilience in the relationship between humans and rehabilitated animals
  • Examine the meaning of reciprocity in the relationship between humans and rehabilitated animals
  • Understand the meaning of the human animal bond at the level of larger ecological and social systems, family dynamics and attachment.
